Shades

Students learned how to create shade in a art work!

1. Students drew a landscape on a sheet of watercolor paper with a dark crayon. They colored in in so just the silhouette of the landscape is showing.

2. The student then place the artwork in a tub of water.

3. Once soaked, the artwork is placed on a plastic container cover. They place a sheet of the same size colored tissue paper on top and pat it down.

4. A half size of black cray-paper is place on the upper half of the landscape. This is pressed down slightly. The next person in line is ready to repeat the same process by placing their wet landscape on this students work. The class continues to pile up their work, tissue, and cray-paper on top of one another.

5. to help the black die from the cray-paper blend down into the art to create shades, I squeezed some water on the top portion of the art and let it drip at an angle. I took the tissue paper and cray-paper off after 30 minutes and placed the work on a drying rack.

Each work turned out different and of quality. These are frame worthy projects!

Value

Students discussed and demonstrated value. It was fun because value was a spelling word in their math class at the time. We were able to talk about the different meanings.

ABC Loop Pattern

We had so much fun making out ABC Loop Patterns. I talked to the K's about ABC patterns and reviewed the primary colors. I like doing this project around the holidays because I think the loop lines look a bit like holiday lights. Big shout out to Kim Robers-Sletten who was one of my student teachers. This lesson was introduced to me in her classroom.

Slab Project

My little fashion designers! We had a blast adding and subtracting clay to create their slab projects! These pictures create a very 'girly' project but many students not interested in dresses were happy to create sports jersey. Fun for all!

Shape Review

We did a little experiment at the beginning of the year. Students created a city scape stencil. They splatter painted to create the sky. 5th graders loved using toothbrushes and spattering their art with different colors of paint. When dry, the finished the city scape with colored pencil.

Hatching and Cross-Hatching

Students learned to create value with line. They used their backpacks for a subject. I was told it was 'cool' to use their bags. I think it made the pictures much more personal for them.

1. Students drew their backpack using contour line.
2. Students created several values using hatching and cross-hatching.
3. We used several pieces of ripped tissue paper and used water to paint it onto the paper. The tissue paper was later removed and the die from the tissue paper remained.

Updated... I got this idea from Nancy Walkup, from SchoolArts Magazine. When I posted this I was new to the whole blogging thing and didn't know about siting my sources. Please forgive me and check out all of what Nancy has to offer. She is an amazing resource!

Complementary Colors

Monster Mash! Students designed a 3-D monster using complementary colors.

Intermediate Colors

Don't get to close! These flowers BITE. Flowers were painted with watercolors creating intermediate colors.

Color Review

Third graders started the year out with a fish color review. Each student created several fish filled with design. They colored the fish in such a way to highlight a color group such as primary, secondary, warm or cool colors.

Free-form Sheep... I mean Shapes.

The students create a free-form shape which later became their sheep. These sheep are so darn and have such personality!

Green

First grade students learned blue and yellow make green!
