Big Changes for Mini Matisse...

I love my job! Anyone who reads this blog knows that. I'm lucky enough to have a great staff, wonderful families to work with and some of the best kids I could ever want to teach. I have been teaching at Rogers Elementary for seven years now and was presented with a wonderful opportunity. Next year I will be working with 7th and 8th grade at Rogers Middle School. I am so excited! This will be with many students I have taught for years and lots more that I am thrilled to meet. I know that this change will be an exciting challenge for me.

Art Note for the Paint by Number

Here is an example of the Art Note I attached on the back of the Paint by Number Project. You can get a better view of it on my google share site. This Art Note helps young artist fully explain the concept of the project. It shows the new shapes the students learned. Mediums, tools, and process is also addressed on this note. It also gives kids a bit of a challenge at identifying the even and odd numbers. For an art teacher teaching 650 students as I do, you will see the name includes the last (very helpful when grading) and TC or Teacher Code, so I can keep them apart from one another. I also print the worksheets off in different colors for each of my 1st grade sections so I can identify the class by color as well.

This ruler doesn't work...

When introducing a ruler to young minis I have learned how to avoid some of the mistakes they sometimes make. This is how I explained to create the grid for the paint by number project.

I had to join in...

Fun Art 4 Kids, The Small Art Teacher Site and Mary Making all are bloggers who have shown variations of this wonderful project. I had to join in… I have seen this on many blog and I can't even start to link all of them. If you have a variation of this, please place your link in the comments. This has been a great lesson that ALL kids found success in. I loved placing these in the hall and hearing the responses. You have to give it a try, visit the above links to see clear tutorials. Thanks fellow bloggers for sharing your wonderful ideas. I love my online coworkers!

Success for All...

In order to adapt to the different needs of my students my paint by number project was adjusted a bit. If you have a student with restrictions of movement you can add the numbers to a pallet like this. I also used a larger grid and sheet of paper so this little guys could be more successful with his fine motor skills. The goal is to make every student successful in the body and ability levels they were given.

Paint by Number Geometric Shapes

1st grade students worked on their math skills as they learned how to create their own paint by number. I was excited to introduce this younger generation to something I loved to do as a kid, PAINT BY NUMBER!

The visual art objective for this lesson was to identify and create six new geometric shapes. Last year in Kindergarten student learned what a circle, triangle, oval, square and rectangle was. These shapes were reviewed first. In first grade they studied a pentagon, octagon, rhombus, trapezoid, parallelogram and hexagon.

The math part of this lesson was to demonstrate the knowledge of even and odd numbers. Other skills that were used in this project was how to create a grid and use a ruler to do so.

The kids drew a grid on their paper and then then a large shape. There were instructed that on the inside of the shape they were to put a even number. On the outside of the shape, they had to place odd numbers in each grid space.

The next day the kids were asked to use the correct colors for each number. They loved the challenge.

As you can see the room was cleared of chairs while the kids were moving around finding their colors. It was a fun day!

Review Game...

Have a little time left in class? Here is a great review game you can play with any subject matter. In this case we were reviewing geometric shapes and even and odd numbers. I had two line made and I would call out a shape or a number and the first in each line would try to identify the target and slap it with the fly swatter. I mentioned this game to my sister in law who teaches middle school math and she told me that she plays it too and the older kids get into it as much as the little ones do.

We have had so many trades this year with other schools. I will take the time to share all of them with you in the near future but I couldn't wait to tell you about his one! Recently we traded with a High School from Loudoun County VA. Mrs. Jenkins's class has some WONDERFUL art that she shared with my kids. I LOVED it and my little kids were blown out of the water with the 'really awesome, super cool, amazing, totally "sick", best in the world' art work. Thanks to all the 'Big KIds from VA!
