2-D designs into 3 - D Sculptures

I have done this project for years with my K's.  It continues to be one of the most exciting days for these kids in art class.  They love making sculpture and when they have so much freedom, a lot of colorful paper strips, and a little glue on their fingers, they think they won the lottery.

I first had these little guys review their lines that we learned at the beginning of the year.  They were asked to create a playground, a roller coaster, or an animal environment. They created this on a sheet of paper and had to use the full 10 minutes I gave them for this.

When finished with their drawing we met again on the carpet and we talked about the way we can make lines with paper,  I showed them all the scraps... I mean treasures they had to work with. I don't make the kids do exactly what they drew but a lot of the time they find inspiration in their drawing plan. I always ask my students to only take one strip of paper at a time so they have to get out of their chair a bit and move around the room.  I think this helps a lot of my littles...

It makes me laugh how big some of these sculptures get.  This is all paper that was in the trash from the office anyway, so if they want to use it all up... go ahead.  I love the pride these kids get from creating these mini sculptures.

  1. These are fabulous! What kind of glue did you use? I was planning to do something similar, but I was going to use glue sticks.

    1. Elmer's white glue. I let the kids use it in the sponge form, bottle, or apply it with their fingers.

  2. Thank you for sharing this idea. It is fabulous. I appreciate you child centered approach and thinking of the students (ie one strip so they can get up and move, etc)
