Here is a hit I give beginner ability students when cutting. I ask them to alway 'bubble cut' before cutting close to their desired shape. This allows them to get rid of that huge sheet of paper from trailing along. I also demonstrate that it is OK to trim small pieces off at a time when cutting a shape off.
That's a great idea! Hmmm . . . I can't believe I haven't used this before.
