Become an Illustrator for The Ickabog, by J. K. Rowling Book.

J.K. Rowling The Ickabog Illustration Competition

I was so excited by the announcement of J.K. Rowling a couple days ago. She explained that she is releasing a book called The Ickabog for children who are limited by the 'Stay at Home' order. She will be releasing a chapter or two from today through June 10th on a new website dedicated to this project, The Ickabog

As if that isn't exciting enough... there is an illustration challenge as well. Artist between 7 and 12 years old can create artwork and submit them to a Scholastic Sponsored Competition. Here are some of the things to keep in mind.
  • You need to be between the ages of 7-12 years-old
  • Create your work on a 8 1/2 x 11" blank paper.
  • The illustration can be vertical or horizontal
  • A parent must submit the work on the website by July 17
  • You must keep a portfolio (that means keep all your art for this competition) incase you win, they will need your original artwork.
  • Judges are looking for imagination, creativity, and interpretation of the selected illustration theme
  • There are awards as well... See the website for specifics.
  • You can only submit one image per 'Installment'
It looks to me that an installment is based on days of the story released and the chapters. So, for this first installment, you can draw an illustration of King Fred the Fearless, or Lord Spittleworth, and so on as shown below. See all the installments here.

Become a Teacher

This week YOU, Hassan Elementary students, get to become an Art Teacher!!! I'm so excited to see what you create. You will be making a tutorial... that means a lesson showing steps to create something. This could be a how-to-draw or how-to-paint, or even how to make something out of play dough.  You will take pictures along the way and share them with me.

We will have two weeks to work on this because the second week is a 4 day week, that is May 18-29. The last week of school you will get to see and learn from new teachers... YOU... your lessons will be the assignment for others. Isn't that going to be fun? So what are you going to teach to your friends as you become an Art Teacher???

Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade :

If you are in Kindergarten through 2nd grade you will be creating your tutorial using Seesaw. Here is the link to show you a beginner and more advance way to do this.

3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade

If you are in the upper grades, 3rd grade through 5th grade, you will be going to Schoology this week to find your assignment. Take a look here to watch how to find, edit, and submit your lesson in Art.

Then you can visit this link here to learn the assignment for the week. This will teach you how to edit and what to add to your lesson.

Become a Teacher: Create a Tutorial Using Seesaw

At ISD728 students Kindergarten through Second Grade use the app Seesaw. These videos are designed to help my students 'Become a Teacher' and create a tutorial to show how to draw something. In both of these videos I use Christopher David Ryan as inspiration for my drawing. This is to do two things... show how to simplify a drawing and introduce them to a super positive living Artist!

This first video is designed for my Kindergarten and maybe even first grade students.

Some first grade students will be able to handle this more advanced version of creating a tutorial. For sure, Hassan's second grade students will be able to create a more advanced tutorial by following along with this video.

Become a Teacher: Create a Tutorial Using Google Slides

For the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades, you will 'Become an Art Teacher' by creating a lesson that we will share to others. You will use Schoology this week to make a lesson to share. If you don't know how to find a Schoology assignment, please click here. If you do, watch this video to learn more about the expectations of how to edit, complete, and submit this assignment.

There are four options for you to make a tutorial and 'Become a Teacher'. You can add the images of your steps on to one slide. This is the beginner level. You don't add any words, just add your photos.

Level 2: You will add your images and text (or words). This will show the deeper thinking of how you would explain how to make Art to another person both with visuals (pictures) and words.
Level 3: You can 'duplicate' the slides changing the position and location of your images, writing words, and adding 'extras' like frames around your images, clip art, arrows, additional text.

Level Four: I did not talk about this option in my video because we are currently using so many different devices and it would be hard for me to explain how to add a video to a google slide.  That doesn't mean you can't. If you want to take on the challenge and do some research on google to learn how to take a video, you are more than welcome to take on this advanced option.

Delete any slides that you don't use and submit your assessment to Schoology. If you don't know how to do that, please see this video.

Google Template for Students to 'Become a Teacher'

This adventure of Distance Learning has led me down a choice-based path for my students. I figured we needed to offer choice so students could work at their own level, and use the materials that they have or feel comfortable with.  I have also chose to set up my lessons with a theme of Careers in Art. This upcoming week I am asking my students to 'Become a Teacher'.

My younger students will be using Seesaw to do this (click here- link will be live soon). My older students will be assigned a lesson on Schoology. I have made a template for them to edit. I also have provided a student ready video to teach how to edit and create a tutorial. (click here-link will be live soon).

If you like this lesson and want to do it with your students, I encourage you to do so. I think learning how to explain something to another person is a life skill that should be practiced throughout a students educational career. That is why I think this lesson is so powerful.

Become an Illustrator: Make a Comic Book

If you are into Comic Books, check out Dave McDonald's YouTube and Blog. He give so many great tips of how to create a character, lay out a page, and create a story. If you choose to this week, you can make your own Comic Book page.

I wrote Mr. McDonald to see if it was OK if I used his work in our digital online class. He was excited to share and even made a special video just for Hassan Elementary Students! That is sooooo cool! You will love to watch the video below teaching how to make this silly picture of some of our state icons.

If you are in 4th grade and working on your State Fair Project, you might want to watch this and use the icons from your assigned state instead. What a treat and such a great video.

Become a Curator: Be the Artwork

Photo from Mrs. Calvert's Instagram
This is such a fun project that is trending on Social Media right now. I really hope some of you choose this one. For this challenge, you can become the artwork. First you would find a work of Art, maybe by going to Google Art and Culture. Then you would try to recreate that picture. This video is from a teacher friend of mine in Wisconsin. Mr. Calvert has an awesome collection of fun videos to learn from, be sure to check out his YouTube if you need some more creative challenges.

First watch his video.

My daughter and I did one together.

Now... Check out some of the photos recreated by his students. I pulled these off from Mr. Calvert's Instagram with his permission.

If you take a picture like this you can also share your work on Instagram and tag @TussenKunstQuarantaine or look a the account for more ideas and examples.

Becoming a Curator: Pet Gallery

There is a website called Sad and Useless that wrote this about a recent Gallery Design for pets. They write...

"What happens when you have lots of free time and need to distract yourself from uncontrollable life events? Well, you create an art gallery for your pet Guinea pig (obviously). That’s exactly what Teresa Mistretta did..."

This is one of the options for you to create as you become a curator.  You will make tiny works of art to go on your wall  for your pet to see. If it the art is themed as your pet, that is a bonus. Here are some pictures of that cute little Guinea Pig's gallery.

What Teresa did was create small works of art inspired by famous works of Art. She changed the theme to match her pet and hung the works of art with some tape on the wall at a level her pet could enjoy it.

What pet do you have? What Art would your pet enjoy? I can't wait to see the Gallery you create.

Become a Curator: Floral Design

If you choose to do this challenge you will be finding a work of art online and creating an arrangement with flowers that is inspired by the work. The arrangement can be using actual flowers, or by drawing the flowers instead. To find an Art Work to be inspired by, I would suggest to look at Google Arts and Cultures online collection.

Every year the MIA (Minneapolis Institute of Arts) has a show in the spring called Art in Bloom. I Adore this Art Show and go every year. Floral Artist from the Twin Cities Area choose an Artwork from the MIA collection to become inspired by and create a Floral Design. This year the Artist created at home and the MIA has created a virtual tour of 'Art in Bloom'. Take a look at the full collection here.

I chose to give it a try too...

My husband had bought me some flowers weeks before, they were ready to be tossed out. I thought that I would instead turn them into a work of art before tossing them in the garbage. I used some Christmas ornaments, toy balls, marbles, and Easter Eggs to glue the flowers on. I also had some fake flowers that I glued onto the spheres as well.

I was thinking about this work of art. It's called Buddy Balls and it's by Claire Zeisler. I love them. This is a photo I took years ago of the work of art. These things are huge! I wish I could take you there to see them. They are made with fibers, like yarn!! They are giant yarn pom-poms!

I glued the flowers onto the spheres and arranged them on a plate to look something like the Buddy Balls.

Another way that Artist addressed the challenge is by looking at an artwork and drawing a picture of a flower. You could do that as well. Find a work of art and draw an arrangement of flowers inspired by the work.  Maybe you use the same colors, or give it the same shape.

This one the artist used both drawing and collage to make their work.

Become a Curator: Visit a Museum

One of the options to being an Art Curator is to 'Visit an Art Museum'. If this is the option you choose, you will visit Google Arts and Culture to look at a museum to visit. You can 'go' anywhere in the world. Look for an Artwork that you LOVE!! You will screenshot the work and tell me what you love about it.

To see all of the museums choices on Google Art and Culture, Click Here

I love Street Art, so I might suggest visiting the Global Street Art Collection

Or head to New York and look at the MoMa

Or maybe travel the world and visit Sydney Australia and see the Gallery of New South Wales

There is so much Art to look at. I hope you have fun exploring!

Become a Fine Artist- Fiber Weaving

It's May Day this week so if you choose to be a Fiber Fine Artist you can weave a basket. I want to give you three different ways to weave a basket.

May Day is celebrated on May 1st and the history of the holiday goes back to Roman times as a festival of flowers... People make small baskets filled with treats or flowers to give secretly to friends and neighbors. It is customary to leave the basket on the door step of a neighbor or friend, ring the doorbell and run away.  Watch these fun ladies to learn some hot tips about the best way to share a May Day Basket.

This first one you only need paper and glue or tape. I was inspired by The Kitchen Classroom for this version of using paper to weave a basket!

Another option might be this Woven Basket project. I followed the direction from Craft Project Ideas but made a couple of changes for my project sample.  Take a look at either the images below, or the blog post from CPI.

I wanted to experiment with the things I had around my house. So I used a Styrofoam cup we had left over from our ice fishing hot chocolate days... Thank goodness there is no more ice out there :)

I'm using a liquid glue but was having a hard time keeping it in place so... I used a rubber band. Then I out a little glue on the stick and placed it in between the rubber band and cup. Then I let it dry.

As you can see above, I used 3 sticks to start out with. Then I would give it time to dry and add two more sticks.  When all the sticks are in, you do need to have an odd number of sticks coming from your base. I used pop cycle sticks, but I bet you could use real sticks too... who knows... give it a try. We are all experimenting as a Fine Artist would do.

Then I tied my yarn around one of the sticks and went to the outside, then inside of the sticks in a circle. Do you see how the next time around, the yarn will do the opposite?? If it went behind the stick the first time around, the next time it will go in the front.

At the end I tied off the string and added a little glue to the top of it to hold the know secure. I also trimmed off the extra string and took off the rubber band.

Here is what I learned.  I learned it's hard to use white glue so if you plan to do that, be prepared to be persistent. I learn that if I could use a hot glue gun that might be better but you would need something other than a Styrofoam cut. Styrofoam and heat do not get along. I learned that the yarn was a lot of fun to weave. What will you learn with your creation?

Or you can give this last option a try. You can do a cup weaving with yarn. This is a great video showing the steps.
