Implementing 20%

Click here to see my Beta Page

Per my public announcement of goals for this quarter (see previous post), I have taken a couple steps towards my experiment.  I have 3 sections of 8th grade.  One section I am running as I always have.  The second sections I'm giving more teacher driven/student choice.  The third section I'm doing Andrew McCormick's 20% suggestion.  Mr. McCormick is WAY more fluid then I think I will ever be.  It seems as if he allows organized chaos and I'm a bit more ridged.  I still love his ideas so I've tweaked my piloted program of 80/20% a bit.

Actions I have taken:
  • I have a created a section of my website for the 20% beta project.
  • I have created a pin board for ideas for the 20% if students can't think of an idea on their own.
  • I have introduced and had the students sign a classroom contract stating my expectations. (click here to see it)
Tomorrow is our first 20% day and we'll see how it goes.  I'm really excited about it.

  1. I think it's great that you are running this like a true experiment, with a control group. So often I think we change what we are doing, full on, and don't allow ourselves to test it out. I can't wait to hear more about this.
