We used watercolor for the first time this year with my 2nd grade when we were making the ACT for Australia. I demonstrated dry brush, wet on wet and mixing colors. I typically give them the mixing lesson in 4th or 5th grade but I might change that. These kids were SOOO excited to mix their colors. If you look at the tray I gave them you will see it is missing black and brown. These colors can get so powerful and many times take over a image of a young artist. Because they had the freedom to mix paints in the paint tray they were able to create brown and black... as seen on the tree trunk. My one day project turned into a two day project because the kids were so excited about the freedom to mix. How could I cut that short:)! It was a lot of fun!

No Black and Brown...

I'm glad I am not the only one to be anti-black. A lot of the time I will tell them to use other dark colors like blue and purple to create shadows or replace the black.
ReplyDeletehaha! I've done the same thing to my paint trays:) It is my 2nd grade boys that get sooo excited and mix black into every color. Go figure!
ReplyDeleteI usually tell students not to get the black or brown ready today. Most of the time they listen but someone often has to tattle on another student for sneaking a brown or black stroke in there. I need black for some wax resist projects so I typically keep it in... Love the drawing that student did! What a nice full drawing!
ReplyDeleteOne of my students consistently answers any question about colors with "No Black!" I think that I finally got to one of them! lol
