Become an Illustrator: Design Your Own Character

A lesson that I was going to do with my 4th and/or 5th grade this year was to create a character. This lesson brings you through designing your own character rather than redrawing someone else's character.

I was inspired by Lauren Minco Lowen for this project. I reached out to her a couple of years ago explaining that I was using her work as inspiration for my students and she was so cool! She even sent my student's gifts of her artwork as well as a wonderful letter (pictured below-- so sweet!). Look at her words to our students...

If it's hard to read, She writes in the second paragraph:

"In case you didn't know, I am what is called an illustrator. This means I make art for things like books, magazines, and for things you use everyday like journals, and stickers. I've always been creative and now I am lucky to have a fun job that I love.

If you want to also have a creative job when you are older, you can keep a sketchbook, take art classes in school, and even go to special colleges that focus on art and design. But don't forget about your other classes! Those are important too, and you can have several interest as a person."

So there you have it!! Let's get started becoming an illustrator today.
