I'm in LOVE with notans...

Our Pinterest inspiration!
I saw the above work of art on pinterest a couple of weeks ago and I had to give it a try.  I gave students a 'engineer' assignment.  After practicing several ways of creating notans, I asked my students to create a notan using only one sheet of red and one sheet of white paper.  Another goal for my students was to make at least 20 transitions (the whole class moaned when they heard this).  Most students were able to accomplish more then 20 transitions.  Check out all of them on our flickr site.

  2. Cool. I've never done notans, and while they look easy to understand the process, I'm a little befuddled and can use some details. How do you keep from losing all the little papers? Do you 'glue as you go'? And if so, How do you do the ones that are cut and flipped back and forth? ( one heart inside another for example) What age kids do you think could do this successfully without getting frustrated keeping things where they belong? Am I making sense?

  3. I did a modified version of your lesson with my 5th and 6th graders. I wrote it my blog and credited you! My students loved your heart notams. Thanks for posting.
