Everyday Day Art Room- A Small Concept in Big Way

Today on Everyday Art Room I'm sharing how we have so many things to cover as Visual Arts Teachers, sometimes it's hard to know what to focus on. For many years now, I have worked on one small aspect, one concept, and made it so big that ALL students will know that term or that idea or concept for the rest of their lives.

Introducing Studio Stories- Books to Support the Art Studio

Well, it's back to school time... you know what that means? It's time to start thinking about mARTch Madness. That might seem silly to think about March when we are not even in September yet, but it's the drive to my 'warm-up' lesson this year.  In the past, I have done Monster Mediums, Process Pigs, and Bit-O-Bios. These have all been a little warm-up for all the students and in March, we have a big celebration where students get to vote for their favorites. This year, I'm starting Studio Stories! 

I have spent the summer looking for books that support the efforts of my lessons, books that promote the Arts, books that talk about BIG ideas that can be a jumping off point for my curriculum. I enjoyed every minute and found so many books!! I'm continuing my quest throughout the year.

I am collecting all the books, but if they are in my library, I borrowed them and read them so I would have the books available to my students at all times. I recorded them, I also created many lessons inspired by the books I found.  I plan to share the books and lessons throughout the school year.  I will be posting here as well as adding to this playlist on Youtube.

I will be using these books for this years mARTch Madness.  Each book will be presented to the students at the start or end of class. This way they will get a little flavor of the books that we are studying. No, they will not be making a project inspired by each book... sometimes it will just be a few minutes of a story for my kiddos to hear. In March, we will vote for our favorite. 2018/19... Here we come! 

#Crush Announcment

The last two years I have celebrated February with a series called #Crush. This February I would like to continue my #Crush celebration but this time I'm going to crush on Mediums.  See every week since the start of school all of my elementary students have had the same kind of warm up as they enter my classroom. They come in and I introduced them to a new Monster Medium. The purpose of the warm-up is to get students to 1) understand the what the word medium means in Art. 2) To help them recognize different media use and techniques 3) To create some routine fun-- yep, you can have a system set up to have fun. :)

I'll highlight the Monsters a bit more in March when we have brackets to vote for our favorite Monster Medium. This month, I'm going to #crush on different Media. Here is my schedule.  I think it would be fun to hear what your favorite lessons, uses, or techniques are with these mediums. I'll be sure to share some of mine as well! STEAMed Magazine and Conference from EducationCloset

EducationCloset has some very exciting things happening this week that I really wanted to share with you.  First, the quarterly digital magazine STEAMed came out a couple of days ago.  It is full of great resources and articles circling around STEAM.  Click here to read more. 

I was honored to have an article published in the magazine this time.  I wrote about #ProcessPigs that I implemented last year in Hassan Elementary's Art Studio (click here to see all the pigs).  I love sharing about #ProcessPigs or my Monster Mediums because it's one of those teaching practices that really worked!  As with all teachers, I'm sure you try about 1000 lessons, techniques, and experiments before you can say... 'Yep, this one works.' That is what this article is about... the one idea out of 1000 that worked in my Art Sudio. 

And then this!! EducationCloset has their upcoming summer ONLINE conference. This was some amazing PD in the past and looking at the line up now... I know it will be amazing again.  Why can I say that with such conviction?? I chat with some of these spectacular educators on a regular basis on #k12ArtChat. Trevor Bryan, Joy Schultz, Arlene Shelton, and Rich Stachon are part of my #PLN (Professional Learning Network) and inspire me all the time. Join them... Bit-O-Bio, A Bit of a Biography

I'm so excited to introduce my newest adventure.  I'm calling it Bit-O-Bio.  This is going to be my new 'Moster Medium' or '#ProcessPigs'... This year I'm concentrating on Biographies of Artist.  What do I mean by all that... Let me share. 

Several years ago I gave a presentation at the AOE (The Art of Education) online conference on Monster Mediums in my classroom.  Feel free to view it below but basically, I wanted my students to know that the word medium means "materials used in an artwork".  I would introduce them to a 'monster' hanging on the wall every week. Then the kids would guess the medium of the monster and because this was our daily warm up, every student was able to use the word medium in their normal vocabulary by the end of the year. 

I did the same thing with Process this last year.  Check out any of the many videos of #ProcessPigs that I created. Students K-5 were able to talk about the 'process' of their own artwork in a sophisticated way by the end of this year because it was part of our daily 'cool down' in art class. 

This next year I'm tackling Art History... As you might have caught in the video above, this was part of my long-term goal.  If you have been watching my Instagram account, you know that I'm working on these paintings of Artist.  They are my own style and I'm loving ever minute!  I plan to create a video for each artist.  These videos are going to be 2 to 4 minutes long giving some highlights of the artist life.  I will be hanging the artist image in my classroom and each week as the students come in, I will have the video play at the start of class. As a wrap-up at the end of class, I will quiz students about what they have learned.  

I have just completed my first Bit-O-Bio, A Bit of a Biography.  Of course, I had to do it on Bob Ross... anyone who knows me, knows I love this dude!  In the past, I have been asked if I would sell my Monster Mediums or #ProcessPigs... I would love to, but I would have to quit teaching to make the beautiful works of art.  This time, I have made my images and videos digital so I can share them with anyone else who would like to implement a little more art history into their classroom.  I will be adding new artist throughout the summer.  I am selling them on TpT (Teachers pay Teachers).  This is what you will get if you buy a Bit-O-Bio.

I have made a video introducing the artist. This is a short 2-4 minute video with kid-friendly language. It highlights some 'kid-interesting' facts. I draw the story in the recording so it kind of shows drawing process as well.  

I took a picture of the key images and formulated some review questions.  My plan is to show the image to my kiddos so that they have a visual prompt as well as a verbal question. I will give these as students are lining up, or maybe for a brain break.  I plan to also have these posted outside my room for teachers to use as they line up to come into the classroom. 

The images are what have been feeding my creativity this summer. I love the fact that I have been able to think about these great Artist, research them, and create a simple explanation to share with my students.  The process of these paintings has been so much fun because I'm learning how to use photoshop yet I am still being true to my hand skills with watercolor and drawing.  I also feel that I'm being true to my 'style' of drawing.  I compare these artworks to ones I did even in high school and I see lots of similarities.

The Definition of Process

Take a small idea, and make it big.  Last year we talked about the word medium every day for our art warm up with EVERY class using the Monster Mediums. This year it's the #ProcessPigs.... We are really thinking about the word process, what does it mean?  The definition that I'm giving the kids is 'How it was made'.  Nice, simple, and hopefully will stick with them forever.  We have introduced several pigs so far and the kids are loving the routine.  When they come in, I say...

"Hey class, I have a #ProcessPig to show you." 

The class says together

"Hey Mrs. Hahn, how was it made?" 

This way they have to say the definition every time they come to art.  It's become a bit of a joke for the kids.  They laugh and giggle to say the words.  If I forget to say my line... someone always reminds me.

Introducing #ProcessPigs

If you follow my Pinterest Board, you would have noticed among the 13,000+ pins, a large amount of pigs being pinned. You might remember last year at about this time, there was a bunch of monsters being pinned... That was to prepare me for my Monster Mediums that are hanging in my room right now... and the pigs are preparing me for next year... 

I'm excited to introduce you to #ProcessPigs ! This is part of my Summer Goals for 2015.  I will be creating pigs with many mediums and many different processes.  I will be documenting the process and again, having the students learn about each pig created throughout the year as a warm-up.  The goal is to have students understand the what the word process is, but more so, to let them become excited for trying different process in art.   

My friends would laugh at me pinning or picking pigs as a subject.  I grew up on a farm and I'm not really an 'animal person' as you find in the suburbs where I live now.  I have friends who dress their dogs up, bring them to Starbucks, and let them sleep with them at night.  I have NO problem with this in anyway, shape or form... it's just so not me.  I enjoy the love people have for their animals.  Anyway, why pigs?  Because it starts with 'P'.  I don't have to be in love the the subject to be in love with the process.  

Summer Goals

I am giving my students at Hassan Elementary a Summer Art Challenge.  In doing so, I thought, "Well, Nic Hahn... What are you doing to work on your creativity this summer?" So I thought I would share my ambitions of this summer.  I'm really excited and would love for you to join me in some or all of them.  

Goal 1:

I have been challenged on Twitter by @smARTisteacher to do this 30 day sketch book challenge. Than I saw my dear friend Mickey Jurewicz posted the same thing on the Art Teacher Facebook page.  Well why not?  Here I go, June 1st with the Journal Fodder Junkie's 30 day sketchbook challenge.  I'll be sure to use this platform to update on my progress. 

Goal 2:

My daughter has asked me to work with her on the Summer Art Challenge.  My kids do not go to the school I teach at but Matisse loves to do everything that I teach my students.  We will be sure to do at least a few of the activities that I have planned for my students.

Goal 3:

I'm in phase 2 of my 'little concept, BIG IDEA' decorations for my classroom. Last summer I made Monster Mediums,  this year I'm tackling the concept PROCESS!  You will probably see the sketchbook challenge and the Summer Art Challenge align with this new concept.

Goal 4:

This is my 4th year of participating in the photo journaling activity of 'Project 52'.  Click here to see a 52 week project on Facebook, it's not mine, but it gives you the idea.  I want to get a little more creative with the images that I'm taking to document my families lives.  Every 100 pictures I print out a book on Blurb.  I also post pictures often on my personal Facebook because this is the best way to communicate with friends and family what is going on in our lives.  We both have family a distance away from us, so Project 52 is perfect.

Goal 5:

I want to read.  I don't consider myself a die hard reader, but I want my kids to know that there can be a lot of joy in reading.  I want to make time for family read time this summer.  I will be doing some book studies this summer through ISD #728. The three books are...

• "The Discomfort Zone: How Leaders Turn Difficult Conversations into Breakthroughs" by Marcia Reynolds

 

• "Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time" by Jeff Sutherland
• "Mindsets in the Classroom: Building a Culture of Success and Student Achievement in Schools" by Mary Cay Ricci

 

• "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio... This is going to be a family summer read.  We plan to read this book at the same time other families are reading it and discuss the powerful message in the book as families.  Never tried a family Book Study, we'll see how it goes.
• Finally, the kids wanted to do a summer reading group with their friends.  We are thinking about The Time Warp Trio series for my 4th grade son (specifically, Summer Reading is Killing Us, No.7) and Junie B Jones series for my 2nd grade daughter.  I think we will just put it out there that the kids can read whatever they want from the series and when we get together, we'll share about the books we read. 

For book club we are reading the following 3

• June: Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons By Lorna Landvik
• July: The Wild by Cheryl Strayed
• Aug: Defending Jacob by William Landaut

OK... That should be enough reading for the summer!!  

Goal 6: 

Not so much in the creative department, but none the less a goal.  I will be working on eating healthy, working out, and being active with bike rides and walks with my dear family. 

Goal 7: 

Gardening will continue to be a large part of my summer as well as fishing and traveling.  We have family trips planned to visit my husbands family in WI, my sister in IA, and my family near Rochester MN. These are the summer activities that have become routine and the reason I'm looking forward to the end of this week.

Goal 8: 

The Art of Education conference and classes.  I just finished a iPad's in the Art room course through AOE.  I am an instructor for AOE and will be teaching classes throughout the summer, but I'm also a student.  The last class was great!  I have a focus now for how I want to use iPad's in my classroom next year! I also will be presenting at the AOE online summer conference.  I can tell you my presentation will be on Artist Trading Cards.  I'm so excited to share a really BIG idea to go with these little cards. Maybe I'll 'see' some of you in my classes or at the conference. 

I always write goals down on my blog, It's a way to really say, I'm serious and really want to be successful.  Blogging about these goals makes me accountable, and gives you a little insight into what the summer posts will include.

Teacher inspired by Maroon 5

You don't have to know me long before you find out that I'm a HUGE Maroon 5 fan.  I have liked the group for years, listen to their music, continue to turn up the song SUGAR no matter how many times they play it on the radio.  No, I'm not one of those fans that knows everything about the band other than the fact that Adam and I are the same age (I think).  I like this fact because it's fun to think about what he has done with his life in the same amount of time as I have had in this life.

My husband bought be tickets for my birthday and last night was the BIG night.  It was me, Tim (my husband) and a couple other thousand middle age women celebrating the music from this energetic band. I had a smile on my face the whole time. I couldn't help but analyze what made this concert the best concert I've ever been to.  Besides the fact that I love the music, and can appreciate the band members... what made it so great, and how can I apply it in my profession as an art teacher? Here is your spoiler alert.  If you are planning on going to his show, you should maybe skip the rest of this post.

• Assure a Great Opening Act- Magic was the opening act.  They played their lesser known music with a reggae sort of beat... It left the audience chill, calm, and relaxed.  The whole stadium was smiling with anticipation while listening to this group play their hot music.  They ended their set with 'RUDE' and the crowd went wild (side note, I couldn't listen to the music without singing my music parody about Glue)  In my classroom? It's important to make a good relationship with homeroom teachers so they are willing to pump you up.  Having classroom teachers support starts the relationship with each class off on the right foot. 
• Preparing the Stage- Magic finishes up and about 30 guys are immediately on stage.  They are moving the set and revealing a glass floor.  I sat there in awe as they transformed the stage.  There was a man sweeping the stage to assure that it would be safe to perform on.  These guys don't have the 'big name' they are not recognized as playing a part, but boy do they.  In my classroom?  I think about the custodial staff that I'm so honored to work with. I have a great team behind me, making my room 'safe' for me and my students.  At my school, we have wonderful Administrative Assistance who put in the orders, create a school atmosphere that is up beat and welcoming.  They decorate the lounge and help us celebrate. These are the people that I appreciate so much because they make my 'big show' possible. 
• A Grand Entrance- The stage filled with smoke... the lights flooded the area with green and white. There were jungle sounds filling the space. The floor opened up and each band member stepped foot on stage greeted with an amazing roar from the crowd.  The band began it's set with Animal, and my mind was blown! In my classroom? Well, I'm planning on talking to my principal about a trap door, fog machine and maybe some Christmas lights... but if that falls through, I want to be there to greet each student as they come in.  I will continue to stand by my door for every class giving them something to look forward to. 
• Making us Feel 'Seen'- Adam bounces from one side of the stage to the other.  He would point at us (well, I'm pretty sure he was pointing at me) and yell out to each area of the arena.  He made us feel as if he was sharing this night with us, each one of us.  In my classroom? I try to do this but it was a good reminder to make sure every student feels 'seen'.  With a case load of 800 ish students, this task can be difficult.  I like to do thinks like smile at kids giving me eye contact, highlight a table that is working hard or a student who is helping another.  At conferences I made the time to write one or two lines about each student.  I wanted my students and their families to know I see your kids, I love your kid. I will continue to share ideas with you of acknowledging students. 
• Starting with ACTION- The first 20 minutes was filled with song, energy, shifting lights.  The band transformed the stage over and over.  Each song had a different flavor because of the creative geniuses that manage the sound, lights, and special effects. In my classroom?  I want to give the kids action right away... Invite them in with a warm up, an activity, a prompt.  I have done this so far this year with my Monster Mediums.  The MM's are done now so I've been working on establishing some new table jobs.  NOT as exciting as the monsters.  I need to get back to an action grabber something to grab the kids right away.
• Introductions and Appreciation- There was a break after about 20 minutes where Adam took the time to introduce the members of the band.  Each group member did their little solo and we celebrated each one.  Then he said with sincerity, thank you, to us his fans. He let us know he appreciated our support and enthusiasm several times throughout the concert. We were giving him and the band back as much energy as he and the band was sending our way. In my classroom?  I want to celebrate the students in my classroom.  They create the energy.  They bring celebration to my classroom. They give me reason and purpose and for that I am grateful. I want to let them have their solo, giving them a voice.  Perhaps allowing them the chance to teach, show off their hard work or simply share a story.
• Allowing the Audience to be the Audience- I have mentioned this a couple times on this blog but my husband and I do not have a cell phone.  Last summer we inherited a flip phone from my father-in-law who passed away and we have put some minutes on that once and a while.  We carry it when we are away from the kids and we have a babysitter... umm... so last night :) We don't leave the kids to often. Anyway, because we don't have a phone, we witness the mass addiction our culture has to their phones.  The Maroon 5 concert was no exception. Adam and the band embraced this fact. He requested the whole crowd to put the flash lights on their phone and hold it up.  It looked like a sparkling, starry night.  In my classroom? I allow my kids to be kids.  Kids like to move around the room with out stepping on lines, make a game of it.  Kids like to crawl on the floor, allow them to work under their tables sometimes.  Kids like to make weird noises. Allow them to make a puppet and give it a weird sound.  Let kids be kids as Maroon 5 let the audience be the audience.
• Teach Mindfulness- This made my mind swim with affirming understanding. After he played with the audience for a while asking for the cell phone light, he shot the crowd and idea.  Adam proclaimed, "Now, put your phones in your pocket".  The heads of the crowd looked to each other like, What?  What did he just say?  I was amazed (and than again not) that so many people were still not able to put the phone down.  He even called a couple of people out on it.  He said, "You control the technology, don't let it control you." Maroon 5 wanted us to be present, to be mindful of the music, the performance, the moment.  In my classroom? We are so lucky at my school because we have a Mindful coordinator.  If you are unclear what that job entails, watch this 60 minute clip on Mindfulness by Anderson Cooper.  It's a powerful idea and we at Hassan celebrate it with our students and staff. We ask our students to take a breath, to acknowledge their feelings, their body, their mind. I understand that this will be a concept brought up many times at the National Art Education Association conference this week.  I'm looking forward to picking up more tips and tricks of how to bring this into the classroom.

As I mentioned, Adam and I are the same age... what has he done with his life in the same amount of time as me?  He has built a career, developed fans, become famous for his skills, and seems to be passionate about his trade.  I'm happy to say I have done the same.  I am an Art Teacher, every student in the school knows who I am, I am known for being innovative and energetic in my classroom, my students know I love my job and I verbalize that all the time.  The Maroon 5 concert left me feeling happy and appreciating the time I spent at the concert.  That is my wish for my students, I want my kiddo's to leave feeling happy, feeling they loved the time they spent with me in art class. Adam was voted most Sexy Man once upon a time... Umm, well I guess we aren't totally the same, but we do share some qualities. Thanks for being an inspiration Maroon 5! 

Table Jobs- Teacher Assistant

I'm working on introducing some new table jobs for my students.  I'm excited to have some students help me explain the table jobs.  I'm done with my monster mediums so now I have a featured Art Job or Procedure (clean up, free time areas, so on...) that I will address with every class as a warm up.  This 6-day rotation will be Teachers Assistant. 

Write a Monster Story

We have had such a good time learning about the Monsters in Mrs. Hahn's room and their Mediums!  To see all about the Monster Medium project, click here. This monster is our last.  His name is D.J. Mix.  Most of the time we try to guess the medium in class... but today I'm going to tell you what it is... It's MIXED MEDIA.  Mixed media is when you use lots of mediums to make one work of art.  The only problem is, I don't have a story to go with D.J. Mix... That were you (Hassan Elementary Students) come in.

AOE Conference Presenter

I'm so excited to announce that I will be presenting at the AOE winter conference.  I love this conference.  I always get a BURST of energy and ideas from it.  It's quick and to the point.  In addition, I have the honor of presenting, actually twice. 

I will be talking about my Monster Mediums as well as co-presenting with Don Masse from Shine Brite Zamorano about my collaborations projects. I'm really excited to share about both.  Come check out the other offerings on the AOE site. 

Calling all Monster Mediums...

Last week I offered an opportunity for all Hassan students to participate in their very own Monster Medium.  So far, I have had some GREAT Monsters handed in.  I will display the monsters from Oct. 13th- Oct. 31st.  This is an optional opportunity however, I have been impressed with all the participation.  I have some very talented students!

Featured Monster (Medium)

I started my Featured Monster of the week (well actually I'm on a 6 day rotation so it's a bit more than a week).  Anyway, in the hallway I have the monster and their bio.  The kids can visit this monster and get the answer before class... or show their classmates later in the week after they have art.  I wanted to make this interactive so you can see the pick paper can be lifted to give the answer.

As students enter the room they will see the monster highlighted on the wall as well as on my screen saver.  I read the bio to every class and ask them if they know the medium.  It has been really great to see all levels really relate to this activity.  It only takes about three minutes as students are trickling in from bathrooms and so forth.  I'm really happy with this activity thus far.

How am I going to keep up with this?  I already have all the bios done (click here).  The monsters are hanging and the arrow is ready to be moved around.  The bios are printed off and the screensaver images are saved on my desk top.  I also have all the mediums for under the pink sheet printed off.  I wanted to assure that I was consistent with this big project.  I really was intentional in setting myself up for success!

Monster Mediums: Yarn

A couple more monsters... 

This is Hannah and she is a Veterinarian.  She has always loved animals and now as an adult, she get's to work with them all day long. She will come to visit animals on the farm and at the circus.  She has a business where people bring their animals to her as well. She has some pets at home too, two cats and a dog named Nipper (don't get to close to him, he nips) and a bird named Petey.  Hannah also has a large vegetable garden in the backyard where she grows tomatoes, zucchini, peppers and sweet corn.  She also grows some beautiful flowers, just because she loves to stop in smell them right away in the morning.

This is how Hannah was made...

I cut a foam ball in half and cover it with glue.  I wrapped the yarn around and around the ball.  I did the same thing for Hannah's face.  I placed a knot at the end of the yarn and glued it down.  I then wrapped the yarn around and around using glue to keep it in place.

I tried to use a lot of different textures for the yarn.  It makes you want to look at it really close.  I love fibers for this reason.

 I wrapped cardboard for the teeth and placed them and the mouth on with glue as well.

Finally, I cut long stands and placed them on the board and gave it a little braid.  She is upside down because Hannah's a little silly. If you look really close at the bottom of this picture below you will see some preplanning for my monsters.  Even Mrs. Hahn has to pre plan her projects!

Monster Mediums - Metal

This is Latrina.  Latrina is a dancer.  She moved and shakes all day and even in her sleep.  She's in high school now but plans to dance on a broadway stage someday.  When she looks at the world she hears music.  She taps her toe, she snaps her fingers, she smells the beat!  Her mom and dad are proud of their talented daughter.  This bubbly beauty is a popular party guest because she is nice to everyone.  The whole school loves her because she is so kind to everyone around.  Latrina is beautiful inside and out!

Monster Mediums - Watercolor

This is Ghila.  In Hebrew Ghlia's name means joy. That couldn't be closer to the truth.  She loves to love. She loves her mom and dad, she loves going to school, she loves going to bed, she even loves eating her spinach.  Ghila is a swimmer. Ghila has won many awards for swimming competitively. She swims in competitions since she was in fourth grade. She is now in eighth-grade and you guessed it loves to swim.  You can't help but LOVE Ghila!

Monster Mediums- Graphite Pencil

This is Alejandro.  Alejandro has been a nurse at the local hospital for 15 years now. He is extremely caring. People who are sick or hurt come in and see him and he always makes them feel better. He does funny things to make his patients laugh. Sometimes he dresses up like a clown. Other times he shows them magic tricks. On the weekends Alejandro likes to walk his 14 dogs. That's right I said 14 dogs! Alejandro and his 14 dogs live just outside the city. They have a large piece of property where all the dogs can run and play.

Monster Mediums- Chalk

Let me introduce you to Paisley. Paisley is a scientist. She spends all of her time thinking. She thinks about space, she thinks about our environment, she thinks about how to make things better in our world. Her brain is always working on something.
