Bedroom Makeover

My son is going to middle school this year... He's going on 12-years-old. When we moved into our home he was going into first grade.  I was so excited to design his room.  I thought about who he really was... He was interested in maps from his Montessori Preschool. He loved legos and beyond that, the room choices were all me.  I loved his little room, the colors, and designs.

I promised him when he was going into 6th-grade, he could design his own room and we would update it. I never imagined that 6th-grade would come so fast. My son has been researching his room for about a year now.  He has a Pinterest board and loves to go to decor stores with me.  One of his favorite things to do is going antiquing with me.  This kid did not take my words lightly.  He had certainly prepared for this change to his room.

A lot of my son's interests have changed.  He plays baseball, basketball, shoots archery, and trap. He has an RC car that he and his buddies race around the neighborhood. He is part of the SustainERs, a group of kids investigating how to make our city more sustainable. He goes fishing with his dad in the winter or summer. He sews, builds, and creates. He is above all a patriotic person! This boy drinks out of a US Navy glass. His recent purchase of a that has a US flag made out of fish. He still loves legos, but his creations now revolve around our Great Nation (the white house pictured above). So this room was going to be RED, White, and Blue.

Last week he went to his first overnight camp for a week.  It was a hunter safety camp and at the end of this camp, he now has his license to hunt. My daughter went to Grandma and Grandpa camp.  So you know what that means... a wee alone for Mom and Dad... If you have been married for almost 14 years, and you have kids you know this doesn't mean a week vacation for the parents... it means we get things done around the house. I decided to do my son's room for him while he was away.  First, the collection of materials.

I watched the movie Minimalist on Netflix and have a bit of a new outlook on life.  I have been slowly getting rid of the extra in our house... and let me tell you, there is a lot of extras.  One of the things on the chopping block was this trunk (pictured above).  I had it on the 'to go' pile but as I was looking at his, I thought... maybe I could upscale that.  I talked to my son about adding legs (found on Etsy) on it and making a table with it.  He loved the ideas so there it was, our first 'new' piece of furniture for his room.

My Aunty gave me some of her collection of keys once upon a time, I arranged them, glued them down in a shadow box and knew someday I would find the perfect place for them... My husband was also busy minimalizing our garage at the time.  He too has an abundance of 'things', tools being one of them on the list.  He came up with a upcycling project for the room as well.

I found this mirror at an antique shop about a year ago and it was perfect for my son... impulse buy finally used and hung up :)

Looking around the house, I had this great lamp but the gold needed a little updating.  A little plastic wrap and black spray paint gave it the look that would fit perfectly in this room.

A donation of a 1940's blanket from a coworker made its way into the room too.  I cut it down and made a pillow sham out of it.  I was able to use the 'character' of the blanket in the newish pillows. It brings a little charm to the room for sure.

Then, the biggest change... the color.  My son wanted red. I have painted red before and know it's not easy to get an even coat... but that was several years ago.  The new paint that I bought did a great job and in two coats the Neon Green turned 'No More Drama' Red.

Then we had a couple of new builds.  We had to make a run to our local hardware store to gather some pipe after seeing this amazing post from Remodel Aholic which gave such wonderful directions for the DIY desk we added in the bedroom.

We did a little laser engraving for the focal artwork in the room.  We used the same stain as on the shelving unit for this amazing homemade US flag.

Once the materials were all gathered... it was time to assemble the room.  I couldn't wait!!!! Here's what we ended up with.

Because the flag was so light weight we simply used a trim gun for the flag to be hung.  You can't even see the little nails.

The bedding and curtains were purchased new from Bed, Bath and Beyond.  They were picked out by my son.

The light-up star was a reused from another area of the house purchased at Target a while back.  See the trunk?? It fits perfectly against this tiny wall and I can see it being used for a docking station because there is an outlet behind it.

The desk turned out amazing!! We made it a standing desk with a 3-foot pipe below. We then added a 2-foot pipe so there is enough room for a laptop. 6th grade in our schools goes 1:1 devices so we need to think about that for this room.  The stool was a purchase from World Market... I love that store. It's a real sturdy piece of furniture.

Everything on this shelf I'm sure will change on a regular basis, but for now, the keys, some old books, and cigar boxes fill the shelves. The boxes double as storage for pencils and whatnot.

See what a little spray paint can do?? I love spray paint for refreshing what you already have.

Check out the hat display my husband designed. We made the bottom of the hooks align so that anything hanging from them would be straight. We also varied the size of the wrenches.  We measured it for hat display, however, I'm sure my decorating kid will switch this up now and again.

So there we have it.  A week's worth of hard work to last this kid until he leaves the house.  I hope he continues to love this room as much as he does right now.

You Don't Have to be an Adult to be an Artist

So many of the Artist that I have been introducing my students to are very old, or dead.  I wanted my students to have some peers to look at, someone their own age that knows in their heart that they are an Artist.  I just happen to have two Artist at home more than willing to be featured in a Bit-O-Bio for my students.

First I showed the Matisse Bit-O-Bio.  I was excited to share that she was a recent winner of the Youth Art Month Poster contest.  She loves to draw, paint, explore and she excels in Art in school.  She also does great with Phy Ed, Music and Math.  The Bit-O-Bio shares that she struggles with reading and must work hard to be successful.  Persistence is a great message to my students in this Bit-O-Bio about Matisse.

The next week was about Sawyer.  The reason Sawyer was perfect to highlight for my students was because he is a VERY different artist than Matisse.  He is a sculptor.  He works with a lot of mediums, but most often with legos. I had kids coming up to me after his Bio to tell me that they didn't know that you could be an Artist by 'building things'.  This Bit-O-Bio spoke to that group of kids that sometimes are a little resistant to Art class.

Week three... I show the following video.  I always like to give a follow up somehow.  Show images of Artist work, or images of the Artist themselves.  I have a few images saved up over the year of these two... so this video was easy to make.

If you would like to introduce these two Artists to your students, feel free to visit my Teacher Pay Teacher page (click here).

A very ART FILLED New Years Resolution

First, allow my family to wish you a very Happy New Year! Video below has the story, set, costume design, and characters created by my very own Mini Matisse.  The whole family helped out with the voice over.

Did you see the awesomeness that Cassie Stephens posted recently to celebrate the upcoming New Years?  Wow does she have her goals laid out there.  I mean really... focused, clear and dreaming BIG!  I knew there was a reason I loved that girl, well that's at least one reason.

In the past I have put goals out there for my professional goals, but not today.  Today I want to share some goals that I have for my personal life rather than my professional.  If you watched the video you saw that my number one New Years Resolution this year is to collect art from friends.  I want to fill my home with art... art that I love, art from the people I love.  I have been working hard at decorating my classroom with artwork that I love, but now... it's time for my home.
I'm going to start with this wall!

This is my front room.  I never wanted a 'front room' but we have used it a bunch... playing games, chatting with friends, sometimes homework.  See the feet on the wall... they are the Hahn's feet.  I love that picture but my 8-year old's feet were newborn in this image.  I need to switch it up.

Here's my plan.  I spent the day creating 8 X 8 boxes.  I had my husband show me how to use all the tools I needed to make these little gems... and I have a good start to my wall of art.

I plan to put out a personal invitation to create a mini work of art for my wall.  I have a budget for the artist and/or will offer to create an art exchange. I was playing with the idea of a subject requirement but I chose to go with a color request.  I want each artist to create the style, medium, the subject and the inspiration of their choice but I'm hoping that they would be able to put a little of the blue(ish) color to coordinate the front door in the same room.  I have a Southern Blue door by Behr paint.

I'll send these wooden bases out to excepting artist via mail and hope to have them all back (and on the welcome wall) by the end of 2016.

I have two other happy goals for the new year.  The first is a continuing documentation of our Hahn life. Our family lives away from us so to communicate the happenings of our household, I will be continuing the 5th year of Project 52.  Project 52 is taking a picture (or two) every week and posting a little caption.  I print these books off every 100 pages using Blurb, which allows you to take an album on Facebook and plop it into a book.  I have quite the collection (seen below).

This is perfect for the images that I collect over the year and has taken over as a scrapbook.  Way easier!  I don't have something to document our 3D yearly moments such as movie tickets, notes, and good finds.  I saw this amazing solution on The Idea Room.  A time capsule for the year!! Great idea, right?  I'll give this a try for 2016.

So yes, I plan to do great things in the classroom... you know that. But this year I wanted to resolve to do things I'm excited for, I mean I could put on the list that I need to do a better job of flossing (New Years Resolution for the past 10 years) or collect art. YEP!! I'll choose collecting art.  Have fun picking your goals for the upcoming year!!

Colored Ice Blocks

What to do with a cold afternoon in Minnesota?  Well make an ice sculpture of course.

We always save our containers for well... who knows what activity I come up with:)  This time we filled them all with water and the kids added their own formula of food coloring to the water.  After they froze, we placed the containers in warm water to release them from the mold.  They popped right out this way.

The kids each need a flat surface to build their sculptures on so I gave them some old tops to plastic bins.  They used spray bottles to squirt the ice when they were attaching the pieces.  This acted like a glue (keep in mind it is about -10 degrees in these pictures.

The best part for me is that I was able to send them on the deck to have fun and I could stay inside.  The kids would come in every 10 minutes or so to warm up and want to head right back out to build a bit more.

So far this activity has lasted hours.  The process has been ever changing.  The kids got to investigate color with dyeing the water.  They have created patterns with the ice blocks, built them up high, place them together and knocked them down, they have even tried to carve them with my good silverware:)  Simple fun can sometimes be the best fun!

Slot Shelters and Makedo!

I have some exciting news from Corinne Okada (http://okadadesign.blogspot.com/) She is promoting some really great opportunities.    Start here to learn about her latest slot shelter challenge.  You will find out a creative sculpture like, and technology based project that might be the perfect fit for you!  I'm not sure what capacity I will be participating in this, but I know I will be.  I bet many of you would find this as exciting as I do.  Please, go check it out.

As a side note, I saw that she was sponsored by Makedo...  I wasn't sure what this product was so I investigated.  WOW!!!  I'm glad I saw this before my son's birthday.  It's perfect for my kids... THEY WILL LOVE IT.  Look into it yourself!

Melting Beads

I bought my 3 year old niece some melting beads for her birthday.  I love these things!  I use them all the time for my mini's.  They work great for fine motor.  When looking up information to send with the gift I found a couple of great resources.

Here is a great idea for younger kids... Place them in a cookie cutter and bake on low... why didn't I think of that.  Have you tried this?  Does it work?

Above are some melting bead bowls as well... Very cool!  I got this one from the Meaningful Mama.  Again, any suggestions from people who have done this?

There are lots of video on 'how to' of melting beads... This might give you an idea of what they are if you are unfamiliar.

Fall is coming, inside activities are going to be needed... Here is a GREAT one for lots of ages!

Crayon Prints

Crayon Print, MiniMatisse.blogspot.com

Tis the season for garage sales in Minnesota.  Here's something to add to your list if you run across one at a sale.  I found a hot skillet and couldn't wait for the possibilites.  This is the first project we have done so far.  We made an 'art tent' for shade and I went over the safely of using a hot plate like this.  I wouldn't recommend this for a young audience.  My mini's here are 4 and 6 and both have had a lot of art experience.  Be careful when doing this project.

We took the wrappings off from the crayons.

We did some more open ended and looked at Kandinsky's work a bit.  Here you see Matisse coloring her skillet.  Below is the wax on the skillet.

The next thing you will need is a oven glove and some paper.  I placed the paper on and rubbed it with the glove.  I carefully removed the art and set it aside to cool down.  I would wipe up the suface of the hot plate with a generous amount of paper towel.  WE HAD A BLAST!

Above are a couple more of the finished products.  So much fun!
